Campaign Platform

James' campaign focuses on the following key areas that are of importance to 46th Ward residents:

Making the Ward Safe for Residents

We should all feel safe in our homes and neighborhoods. Unfortunately, many in the 46th Ward do not feel safe. Your alderman should respond to your concerns on all public safety issues and make sure you feel safe in your neighborhood.

As your alderman, I will continue the work I have done in the ward to make public safety a priority by:

  • Committing to you that my office will partner with Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) within the 46th Ward to work directly with residents to address safety concerns in their neighborhood.
  • Collaborating with police, residents, social services, schools, residential buildings, businesses, and the CTA to reduce crime within the 46th Ward.
  • Convening community meetings and educating all residents about important safety alerts to raise awareness about major criminal activity.

Making the Ward Work for You

It’s your right to be kept informed and involved about decisions affecting your neighborhood. I'll make sure you know what is going on in your ward with your tax dollars.

As alderman of the 46th Ward, I will have an open-door approach by:

  • Holding monthly aldermanic forums to discuss developments in city council, provide regular updates on work in progress in the ward, and receive input on future issues affecting the ward.
  • Offering expanded evening and weekend office hours to address your needs. It’s your alderman’s office, you should be able to visit it and be heard.
  • Providing a regularly updated website including a calendar of events for ward meetings and community events.

Making Informed, Intelligent Urban Planning & Development Decisions

Everyone in the 46th Ward – homeowners, renters, and business owners – deserve to have a say in the decisions that affect development and historic preservation in the community.

As your alderman, I will require that development and planning decisions be fair, open, and involve the community by doing the following:

  • Establishing a task force including community residents, business leaders, and neighborhood organizations to create a master plan that will guide future development of the 46th Ward. This plan, similar to ones that have been created in other wards, will guide retail, housing, and green space development within the ward.
  • Forming a zoning and development committee that will participate in decisions about current and emerging residential and commercial projects. This committee will be made up of neighborhood representatives, businesses, neighborhood organizations, and certified urban planners.
  • Honoring the Open Meetings Act and expanding it by holding meetings in the evening and posting on my website notices of all public meetings including the agenda and minutes with recorded votes.
